Wednesday Wants - South Africa

Some of you may already know this, but if not, on 6th September Jamie, myself and his mum and dad are off to South Africa for a holiday. The first 5ish days will be just Jamie & I in Cape Town then we fly back to Jo'Burg to meet his mum and dad for 3 nights in Madi a Thawha and then the rest of our trip is being spent in the Kruger National Park (I think - Jamie's mum is being amazing and doing most of the organising for the parts when we're with them).

So, in typical girl fashion I've been browsing online on what to buy. I've been looking at outfits that are a) versatile and b) can be worn back here. My first point of call, as usual, is ASOS. And I've not been disappointed. This little ensemble caught my eye on my first browse, and is currently sitting in my 'saved items' in the hope the shorts come back into stock in my size (boohoo). My thought on this are, it's a nice two piece that I can wear with together with a plain white tee, secondly the shorts can be worn on their own with a white cami for dinner one night and lastly, the jacket can be popped on with a plain tee and some skinny jeans & sandals combo in the evening (it does get quite chilly at night).

The sunnies - well they're cute.
The hat - I LOVE Converse, I don't care that this is a boys hat - (although I do have a tiny head), still ideal for hiking when sunnies aren't practical.
The bumbag - no explanation required
The nail varnish - you never know, I may acquire a tan and I love bright colours to make it 'pop'

I've also been looking at a lot of things like kimonos, cargo shorts (some brilliant ones in H&M just now), there will be A LOT of trekking and walking so practical footwear is a must. Also, some warm jammies and a new hoody for the cold nights/early mornings will be on the list.

Have any my readers been? Any tips?

Review: Wings Edinburgh!

Do you like chicken? Do you like good banter? Have you been to Wings? I'm actually reluctant to blog about Wings because it's so damn good, and always so damn busy already!! However, it deserves a little review.

*5/7 Old Fishmarket Close, Edinburgh

My first trip to Wings was last year when it was a little secret in the bottom of a Mexican restaurant in Victoria Street, my friends husbands mate from school set it up after a trip to Canada (I think it was Canada...) anyway, I'm not the hugest fan of chicken on the bone, or rather I wasn't. Until Wings.

Wings come in sooooo many different sauces & dry rubs, with so many brilliant names, and you can't have Wings without some chips or strips for dipping, and £2.50 bottles of Corona. (Don't ask for juice - you'll be laughed at!) Wings also do a 'Suicide Challenge' now I LOVE hot food, I LOVE Franks hot sauce which they use BUT - I'm not brave enough. The warning that comes with the challenge is enough to make me not want to attempt - and with only 100/399 completing it, it sort of speaks for itself.

I have to say, I tend to go for the same sauces when I order - I'm not a huge fan of the dry rubs - usually 3/4 per person (if you want to share) are sufficient, and it's about 6 Wings per bowl. My picks would be:

  • Tiger Sauce/Taps Aff/SaberTooth! - All three are spicy, just depends how brave you're feeling that day
  • No Big Dill - Caesar sauce with dill, great for cooling off after a hotter sauce
  • Chalapeno - cheese sauce with jalapenos - two of my favorite things
Jamie on the other hand prefers the BBQ ones, and a couple of the hot. Jamayacain me crazy is pretty good tho.

Now Wings isn't classy, it's paper plates & napkins, it's messy, it's throwing your bones in a bucket, it's brilliant!! It's also full of brilliantly-crazy staff and weird & wonderful decoré!

Day Trip: Scone Palace

At the end of May I had my first holiday since Christmas - work has been mad busy - but I'm also trying to keep most of my holidays for the second half of the year (South Africa, 30th birthday and Christmas/New Year). As well as trying to keep it cheap, so we decided just to have a week pottering about at home. It also unintentionally happened to be the week that we collected our 10 week old kitten - Rudi - the Bengal cross - he's a little riot but brilliant.

On the Wednesday we planned a trip to visit Jamie's aunt & uncle in Blairgowrie. By the time we reached Perth we were a little (OK, two hours) early for out visit so we took a detour to Scone Palace - it costs £10.50 per adult to visit the palace and the grounds, or £6.50 for just the grounds. We just went for the grounds as we didn't have lots of time.

The place is amazing, the sun was shining which probably helped and it wasn't very busy as it was mid-week.The two older gentlemen who were manning the gates were lovely, very knowledgeable and one a fellow Jambo! Can't get better than that.

I could have spent a lot longer there, it would have been a great day to sit down with a book & a blanket, or a picnic. But we had our Tesco meal-deal and headed off for tea & scones at Jamie's relatives instead.
